One look at the season these teams are having and you just know that this pairing shapes up to be one whale of a game. Grand Ledge High School, like Portage Central, has a rich baseball tradition with a pair of State Championships to its credit since 1976. Coach Pat O'Keefe has 968 career wins in his 40 years of coaching Comets baseball. The Comets were riding a storybook 33-1 season until Wednesday night. The Comets suffered a disappointing 5-4 loss in 9 innings to Div. 2 DeWitt in the Diamond Classic championship game, the Lansing area equivalent to the G-K Tournament, witnessed by over 1200 at Lugnuts Oldsmobile Park. Another consideration in Saturday's game may be the five Comet seniors who will be graduating the night before. The success of the Comets this season has been mostly due to the bats, led by junior outfielder Tony Wieber who is hitting over .600 with 72 RBIs. Pitching has been solid but lacking the deal breakers that command the hill for the Mustangs. Comet defense of late has settled down from an early season hiatus. This should be a great matchup but look for the Mustangs pitching to put Comet hits at a premium. When that happens, it could be just a matter of time before the Mustangs batsmen have their way.
