 Varsity
Head Coach Paul Schneider began coaching the Mustangs in
2002 and led the team to the State Championship,
earning the MHSBCA Coach of the Year Award. Playing High
School baseball in Mt. Morris, MI, followed by a
record-setting 4 years at WMU, Paul signed with the White
Sox and played seven years in the minor league. Schneider
coached baseball at WMU before joining the Mustangs, vowing
to make it the hugely successful baseball program that it is
today. Married to wife Patty for 17 years, they have two
rising stars, Derek and Nate. |
Varsity Assistant Coach Don Ampersee enters his
eighth year coaching varsity at Portage Central. A Kalamazoo
Central, KVCC, and WMU grad, Coach Amp played high school,
college, and City League baseball. Amp is in his ninth year
coaching the highly successful Kalamazoo Maroons, a premier
travel baseball organization. Married to wife Connie for 34
years, they have three children. |
Varsity Assistant Coach Fred Oppel has coached the
Mustangs varsity for five years. Oppel played baseball at
both Hillsdale High School and Ferris State University. Next
up was Northwestern, where Coach Oppel earned a medical
degree and now practices Dentistry in Portage. Fred is
married to wife Kate for 24 years and they have three
children, all played or playing softball or baseball at
Portage Central. |

Junior Varsity Head Coach Travis Jones
enters his second year coaching the JV baseball program after
serving as the Assistant Coach for six years. A three year
starter, all-state outfielder, pitcher and leading hitter
for the Portage Central Mustangs, Jones went on to play
baseball at KVCC prior to graduating from WMU. Travis is currently
teaching Phys. Ed. at Portage Central Elementary. |
Freshmen Head Coach Matt Folck is coaching
the Mustangs Frosh for the second year of this new program. Folck brings an advanced
degree in Sports Management from WMU plus 21 years of
recreation/athletics experience. Matt has coached Baseball
at Portage Central for five years as well as serving as an MHSAA umpire for four years. |
